I know it's the beginning of October, but I don't feel like reviewing random October Pay Per Views. I feel like reviewing some WrestleMania's, so I am going to review a couple of Mania's in the next few days. Let's get into this show. WrestleMania 16 aka 2000 began with Lillian Garcia singing the national anthem, they should do that every year, instead of having Fifth Harmony singing. Then there is the WrestleMania 2000 opening video package, which was okay. Let's get into the matches.
1. Tag Team Match
The Godfather and D-Lo Brown w/ Ice T vs. Big Boss Man and Bull Buchanan
Before I even get into this match I have to address the signs, when the pyro went off to begin this show and the camera was panning round to look at all the fans. My jaw dropped when saw how many signs there were, it was a sea of signs. It was incredible. Nowadays on RAW you get maybe 10 visible signs, there was at least 1000 different signs. When the most memorable part about the opening match to a WrestleMania is Ice-T singing 'Pippin Ain't Easy man' over and over again, you know there's a problem. Godfather and D-Lo Brown came down, in the words of Michael Cole in 2015, Godfather came down with his friends...oh Cole.
In this match Boss Man and Buchanan's attire consisted of all black vests and pants, whereas The Godfather and D-Lo Brown had on all white gear. This match was nothing special when it came to an opening match at WrestleMania. Boss Man and Buchanan dominated most of the match, Godfather got the hot tag and proceeded to get on a roll. But then Boss Man hit a sidewalk slam and Buchanan hit a massive leg drop on D-Lo for the pinfall victory.
Rating: **1/2, Time: 9:02, Winners: Big Boss Man and Bull Buchanan
Backstage WWF Women's Champion Stephanie McMahon and WWF Champion Triple H are talking about how they need to continue the McMahon-Helmsley thing at WrestleMania.
Then we get a really funny looking segment backstage where the referees are trying to explain to all these unique personalities in the Hardcore Battle Royal, what the rules are.
2. Hardcore Battle Royal for the WWF Hardcore Championship
I personally enjoyed this match, I was always a fan of the hardcore division. It was fun, it was violent and it was entertaining. During this match there were a total of 9 Hardcore Champions unofficially crowned, but then the last fall decided it. Early on in this match Hardcore Champion Crash Holly got his forehead busted open, in the match Bradshaw grabbed a baking tray and was smashing everyone in the head with it. The main theme of this match was that there were a ton of unique / random weapons at ringside, and there were a cluster of mid card / jobbers hitting one another with them.
I found the visual of one Kai En Tai guy holding a Japanese flag above his head, chasing the other Kai En Tai guy into the backstage area hilarious...it's just me. This match went backstage were I think 3 unofficial champions were crowned. Pete Gas had a really busted open forehead in this match. The ending to this match saw Crash Holly hit Tazz in the head with a baking tray for 3 with 40 seconds left, then with 8 seconds left Tazz had the Tazzmission locked in. Hardcore Holly then smashes Crash in the head with a candy jar for the pinfall to become Hardcore Champion.
Rating: ***, Time: 15:00, Winner: Hardcore Holly To Become The New WWF Hardcore Champion
We see a package of highlights from WrestleMania 2000 Axxess, this was when the wrestlers were flooded by fans and the wrestlers enjoyed being there. Now just about no one attends axxess and it is apparently terrible. Imagine going to an axxess and meeting Austin, Rock, Undertaker, Kane, Triple H, Trish Stratus, Lita, Mick Foley and all the others...wow.
Backstage Al Snow is shown in the bathroom, Steve Blackman comes in and they have an exchange about not doing anything stupid because they need to win.
3. Tag Team Match
T 'n' A (Test and Albert) w/ Trish Stratus vs. Head Cheese (Al Snow and Steve Blackman) w/ Chester McCheeserton
Before this match Al Snow introduced a guy named Chester McCheeserton, this was a guy dressed in a gigantic piece of cheese. If this happened today everyone was destroy it, they would hate it, it would be the worst thing ever, but because it took place in 2000, people probably passed it. I loved how T 'n' A was all about Trish Stratus, even thought she just stood at ringside with a cowboy hat and robe / cape. In this match Test got the win for T 'n' A...nothing incredible here. After the match Snow and Blackman beat down Chester McCheeserton, good on them.
Rating: **, Time: 7:03, Winner: T 'n' A (Test and Albert)
Backstage The Kat is sitting in a make up chair naked, Mae Young is sitting in the room with her. What they proceed to do was a bunch of really well done teases to the fans. This was great, Jerry on commentary was shouting "MOVE THE SHIRT PLEASE!!!!".
Backstage Michael Cole interviews the Dudley Boyz, the Dudley Boyz say that tonight at WrestleMania hey will go out there and take the ladder match to a new level of violence.
4. Triangle Ladder Match for the WWF Tag Team Championship
The Dudley Boyz (C) (Bubba Ray and Devon Dudley) vs. Edge and Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz (Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy)
This was without doubt the match of the night. This match was incredibly entertaining and featured loads of violent spots involving the ladders. Early on in the match we saw a ladder get placed on the mat, then a Hardy would get placed on it. Then either a Dudley Boy or Edge or Christian would do a splash onto them. Bubba Ray did the spot where he puts the ladder on his neck and proceeds to spin around, smashing his opponents with the ladder. Christian early on in the match climbed to the top of the ladder in the ring, then he dived on Bubba Ray and Matt Hardy on the outside.
Edge did a sick spot. Jeff Hardy was climbing the ladder, then Edge jumps from the top turnbuckle and spears Jeff Hardy off of a ladder. In this match there were guys throwing ladders at one another, Bubba Ray hit a 3-D to Christian off the top of a ladder onto the ring mat below. This match was great spot after great spot. The Hardy Boyz did a double splash onto Bubba Ray Dudley. Edge and Christan suplexed Devon Dudley off the top of a ladder onto the ring mat below.
Throughout this whole match we saw guys flying off the top of ladders, moves off the tops of ladders and other forms of ladder violence, and it was really entertaining to watch. Late in the match the Dudleyz pulled out numerous tables, they set up two ladders in the middle of the ring, they set up a table at the top of the ladder towers, then they set up all the tables around the ring. Bubba Ray Dudley got Jeff Hardy on the announce table, Bubba then did a sick powerbomb on Jeff Hardy through a table set up next to it.
There was a ladder set up in the middle of the aisle way, Bubba Ray Dudley set up a table next too it. Jeff Hardy then scales the ladder before hitting a sick swanton bomb to Bubba...awesome spot. In the end Edge and Christian tossed Jeff Hardy off the structure, through a table. Edge and Christian become the New WWF Tag Team Champions.
Rating: ****3/4, Time: 22:30, Winners: Edge and Christian To Become The New WWF Tag Team Champions
5. Cat Fight w/Val Venis as the Special Guest Referee
The Kat w/ Mae Young vs. Terri Runnels w/ The Fabulous Moolah
What happened in this match, lots of shenanigans wit Moolah and Mae Young. Val Venis made out with Terri, The Kat and unfortunately for him Mae Young. In the end Terri was awarded the victory after a lot of shenanigans. After the match The Kat pulled Terri's pants off...
Rating: IDK, Time: 2:26, Winner: Terri Runnels
6. Six Person Tag Team Match
The Radicalz (Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn) vs. Too Cool (Grand Master Sexay and Scotty 2 Hotty) and Chyna
I'll be honest, by this point in the Pay Per View I was starting to lose interest. All these tag team matches, most of them between random midcarders, yes the personnel in most of the matches were entertaining. But I wasn't into this match. All I remember was that Chyna came in at the end and destroyed the whole Radicalz team, she grabbed Eddie Guerrero's nuts before slamming him to the mat at getting the pinfall for her team...moving right along.
Rating: **1/4, Time: 9:37, Winners: Too Cool (Grand Master Sexay and Scotty 2 Hotty) and Chyna
We see a package of a lady who won an All Day Contest for WrestleMania 2000 tickets...great for her. Although if they did that now I'd refuse to enter because I'd hate to attend a WWE show. Then we see Shane McMahon standing with Big Show backstage, Shane is pumping up Big Show.
7. Two Fall Triple Threat Match for the WWF Intercontinental + WWF European Championship
Kurt Angle (C) (C) vs. Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit
Fall 1 - For The WWF Intercontinental Championship
This match features three guys who are all pure technical wrestlers, the kind of style that smarks love these days. But what makes it tolerable is that each of these guys (mainly Angle and Jericho) were really entertaining personality on TV. Kurt Angle as a heel was hilarious, Chris Jericho and his charisma that would get the crowd more lively. Nowadays with guys like Sami Zayn, Finn Balor and Kevin Owens I don't get excitement and I'm not entertained. I could understand the concept of a 2 Fall Triple Threat Match given that Angle had two titles, but this screams Vince Russo. This whole show screams Russo. This first fall was decent and concluded with Benoit's headbutt on Jericho for the 1...2...3, Benoit won the IC Title.
Fall 2 - For The WWF European Championship
The second fall of this match was a bit more enjoyable then the first, Chris Jericho at one point grabbed Angle for a powerbomb. Jericho slammed Angle to the ground before powerbombing him again. At one point in this fall Jericho went flying onto the referee, Benoit locked in the Crippler Crossface. Jericho then locked in the Liontamer, Angle hit Jericho in the head with the title belt. The match rolled on, Jericho would win the second fall with the lionsault. Angle was left beside himself that he lost both titles.
Rating: ***1/2, Time: 13:36, Winners: Chris Benoit (Fall 1) To Become The WWF Intercontinental Champion + Chris Jericho (Fall 2) To Become The WWF European Champion
Backstage Michael Cole interviews Mr. McMahon, McMahon says that he promises to make things right in tonight's main event. Then Triple H is shown telling Stephanie that he is that damn good.
8. Tag Team Match
Rikishi and Kane w/ Paul Bearer vs. D-Generation X (X-Pac and Road Dogg) w/ Tori
This match saw a combination of DX when they were about to be dead (during the first run) and a really random team of Rikishi and Kane. I have no idea about the TV going into this match, but why was Kane and Rikishi a tag team. Kane is a serious monster who doesn't want to be with anyone else, he is teaming with a really goofy Samoan who gives other people stinkfaces. All you need to know in this match was that Rikishi stink faced Tori and Kane won the match with a Tombstone Piledriver on X-Pac. After the match Too Cool ran down, then there was a rooster. Too Cool, Rikishi and the bird dude started dancing. Kane then chokeslammed the bird (Pete Rose) and Rikishi stink faced him.
Rating: *1/2, Time: 4:14, Winners: Rikishi and Kane
Backstage The Rock is interviewed, it's an amazing feeling when you see The Rock come on the screen and you think 'this will be really entertaining'. Rock was lit, he was right into his phrases. He was going on about how tonight he will become the champion.
9. McMahon In Every Corner - Fatal 4 Way Elimination Match for the WWF Championship
Triple H (C) w/ Stephanie McMahon vs. The Rock w/ Mr. McMahon vs. The Big Show w/ Shane McMahon vs. Mick Foley w/ Linda McMahon
Finally we get to the main event of this lackluster Vince Russo inspired Pay Per View, the Fatal 4 Way McMahon in every corner match for the WWF Championship. Looking back, this match should have been Triple H defending the WWF Title against The Rock. The Rock should have won clean and celebrated to end the show as the crowd goes nuts. Instead we got the Fatal 4 Way. Mick Foley was thrown into this match because the WWE felt guilty that he was never apart of a WrestleMania Main Event.
Early on in this match Shane was trying to get involved on the part of the Big Show, only for Foley to club Show in the back with a chair. Then Rock hit the Rock Bottom on The Big Show for the pinfall victory. The Barbed Wire Baseball Bat got brought out, the steel stairs were used, the WWF Title belt was used on Triple H. Mr. Socko got brought out by Mick Foley, Foley did the Mandible Claw aka Mr. Socko on The Rock. The action in this match was decent, but I still found the concept of the match idiotic. Why was Linda McMahon standing at ringside? It didn't add anything to the match.
The botch in this match that saw Triple H set The Rock up on the announce table, Foley was on the top rope ready to take out Rock. Foley jumped and landed on his forearms...it looked horrible. Triple H then attempted a dive on The Rock, that worked I guess. Triple H would hit Foley with a Pedigree on a steel chair for the pinfall victory to eliminate Foley, afterwards Foley hit Triple H in the head with the barbed wire baseball bat.
Shenanigans continued, Shane McMahon came down and attacked Vince McMahon. The Rock and Triple H had a pretty good little match towards the ending. The finish saw The Rock dominating, Vince came storming out. Vince grabbed a steel chair and hit the Rock in the head with it, but Rock kicked out a 2. Vince was beside himself, he hits the Rock again in the head with the chair and Triple H got the pinfall. Fans then started throwing cups of drink into the ring...that was great. Afterwards the Rock came down and Rock Bottomed Vince, Rock Bottomed Shane and hit a spinebuster on Stephanie to end the show with the Rock standing tall without the title.
Rating: ***1/2, Time: 36:24, Winner: Triple H To Retain The WWF Championship
Overall Show Rating: Mediocre; Coming out of this show I got the feeling that at the creative meeting where they planned the show Vince McMahon said to Vince Russo 'Have some fun booking this show'. Because this show was such a lackluster mess, the main event was stupid. Just let Rock beat Triple H one on one in the main event, have McMahon's everywhere (even Linda) and having it go 36 minutes. The rest of the show barely made any sense, tag matches, two fall triple threats and hardcore 15 minute battle royal's.
Don't bother watching this show!
