SummerSlam 2014 begins with Hulk Hogan coming out onto the stage and plugging the WWE Network, this was at the time where the WWE Network was being shoved down our throats to a ridiculous level. Hogan got the crowd to chant "$9.99", which WWE used to put in their WWE Network Song. Then we get the SummerSlam 2014 opening video.
The first match of WWE SummerSlam 2014 was the WWE Intercontinental Championship match between champion The Miz and challenger Dolph Ziggler, The Miz came out and cut a promo about how he is a movie star (all his movies are on DVD's in Walmart bargain bins). Ziggler came out and the match began. This was a solid match, it went for about seven minutes. Miz locked in a Figure 4 on Ziggler at one point in this match, but Ziggler fought out. In the end Ziggler shoved Miz, Ziggler then hit a Zig Zag on him for the pinfall victory to become a two time IC Champion. Cole then shouts "ZIGGLER'S THE CHAMPION" in the quickest way imaginable, I had to pause this and confirm what he said.
We go to the goons on commentary who talk about the Brie Bella vs. Stephanie McMahon situation, then there is a backstage interview where Brie Bella talks about how the Bella's will defeat Stephanie McMahon. Staying on the divas, the second match of the night was AJ Lee vs. Paige. for the WWE Divas Championship. Going into this match AJ Lee was the champion, after a match that went for nearly nine minutes, in the end AJ Lee locked in a Black Widow on Paige but Paige maneuvered AJ so that she could hit a big DDT which she hit for the 1...2...3 therefore Paige becomes the new WWE Divas Champion.
The third match of the night was a Flag Match between Rusev and Jack Swagger, Rusev came down and he cut a promo before Jack Swagger came down with an over the rope patriotic entrance. One thing that was dumb with this match was that it was a Flag Match but it was just a singles match with the winner being able to pose with their countries flag after the match. In my opinion this match was the last time Jack Swagger was apart of a match of any importance, because after this he couldn't get past the PPV Pre-Shows. Rusev won this 10 minute match with an Accolade, he waved his flag and all that, good match.
The camera goes to the three goons on commentary who introduce the next match, Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins in a Lumberjack Match. I think the same thing now as I did when this match happened, why was this match a Lumberjack Match, it should have had a different stipulation. For what this was it was enjoyable, it started out in the ring for about six minutes. Then these guys escaped the lumberjacks and went through the crowd. The brawling in the crowd was what made this match really fun, it made the match feel all over the place. Ambrose hit the suicide dive to all of the lumberjacks late in the match. In the end Ambrose was distracted by Kane, Rollins then hits him in the back of the head with the Money In The Bank briefcase for the pinfall victory over Dean Ambrose.
The fifth match of the night was Chris Jericho taking on Bray Wyatt, I remember at the time in 2014 I thought Wyatt should beat Jericho at Battleground, SummerSlam and Night Of Champions to atleast restore his credibility. But Jericho won at Battleground, that led to this match. This match was okay, the ending to the match saved it. Wyatt hit a sister abagail to Jericho on the ringside barricade, a minute later Wyatt hit a sister abagail to Jericho inside the ring for the 1...2...3 to defeat Y2J at SummerSlam.
The sixth match of the night saw Stephanie McMahon taking on Brie Bella, I absolutely hated this storyline at the time. 'Brie Bella bought a ticket'...that ruined my 'Summer Of 2014', what this match made me think was 'why doesn't Stephanie McMahon wrestle more?', she is more entertaining then the whole divas roster. But instead we have to see Natalya vs. Becky Lynch every week on Smackdown. This match was solid, during the match Nikki Bella and Triple H made their way down to ringside. In the end Brie Bella did a baseball slide on Triple H, Brie is doing the YES chant over Triple H. Then Nikki and Brie close down Stephanie, Nikki knocks down Brie. Stephanie shakes Nikki's hand, Stephanie hits a pedigree on Brie Bella. Stephanie proceeds to pin Brie...meh, this led to the worst storyline of the PG Era.
The seventh match of the night saw Roman Reigns taking on Randy Orton, at this time in 2014 I was legitimately excited for Roman Reigns to be the face of WWE...but then I heard the beanstalk promo a few months later. This match was okay, Roman Reigns was pretty good in this match, Randy Orton kind of carried him, but not completely. Ultimately Roman Reigns bounced off the ropes before cannoning into Orton with the spear, if I had to give this match a star rating, I would say 3.5/5.
The eighth match of the night was the main event of the evening, this match was one of my favorite in the history of the SummerSlam Pay Per View. John Cena was defending his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against The Beast Brock Lesnar, the first 30 seconds of this match saw Brock Lesnar deliver an F-5 to Cena. Cena would hit an AA early on too but he only got a 1 count...besides that Brock Lesnar beat the piss out of Cena, Brock Lesnar would hit 16 GERMAN SUPLEXES to John Cena in this match. That kid who kept yelling out "Let's go Cena" was mind numbingly annoying.
In the end Brock Lesnar hit another F-5 on John Cena to finally get the pinfall, Brock Lesnar became a 4 Time WWE World Heavyweight Champion. At the end of this match the WWE Universe was stunned, this was the only match from WWE in the last few years that I would willingly go back and watch. In terms of actual match quality it was 2.5/5, but because of how awesome it was I am going to rate it 5/5/
Overall Show Rating: Pretty Good; SummerSlam 2014 was a pretty good show, the first three matches of the night were okay, they didn't accomplish much. But then the Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose Lumberjack match happened, that was really enjoyable, that match rescued my interest in this show. From then on I was into every other match, the Y2J vs. Wyatt stuff was fine, the Stephanie vs. Brie stuff was good enough, the Reigns vs. Orton match was fun. Then there was the main event which was awesome, my ratings for the matches are below. Overall this show is definitely worth a watch.
