I just watched WWE Payback 2013, and I was amazed that even this show was 10x better than anything that WWE puts on TV in July 2016.
This show opened up with a Triple Threat Intercontinental Championship match between The Miz, Bad News Barrett and Curtis Axel. The story of this match was Curtis Axel trying to win the IC Title to honor his father Mr. Perfect on Father's Day. In front of the hot Chicago crowd, this match was surprisingly good. Axel at one point hit a Perfect Plex for a 2 count.
In the end The Miz locked the Figure 4 on Barrett, then Axel rushes into the ring and covers Barrett's shoulder for the 1...2...3 to win his first Intercontinental Championship.
Backstage Curtis Axel (who at this time was a Paul Heyman Guy), walks into Triple H, these two have a staredown. Vince comes over and says that he wants to see HHH v Axel on RAW, but HHH says no.
The second match on this show was a Divas Title Match between AJ Lee and Kaitlyn, even the storyline for this match wasn't that bad. The Secret Admirer thing which was used to get into Kaitlyn's head. Towards the end of the match Kailtyn hit a spear on AJ, but because of the mind games Kaitlyn taunted AJ instead of pinning her. In the end AJ wins with a Black Widow to become Divas Champion for the 1st time.
Backstage Kaitlyn is shown crying alongside the divas who can never get on TV (what was Natalya wearing in this match?). We also get a Sheamus vs. Sandow Kickoff Recap, we go to the Payback panel (who were literally at the top of the arena) and a Wyatt Family vignette (when the Wyatt's were actually remotely scary and intimidating). This leads to an Ambrose vs. Kane US Title Match which was solid, in the end Ambrose hit Dirty Deeds to Kane on the outside for a countout victory, therefore Ambrose retains the US Title (this was when Ambrose was enjoyable).
We get a video hyping a Rob Van Dam return at MITB 2013, then we get a match that had great storytelling. The World Heavyweight Title was on the line between heel champ Dolph Ziggler and babyface challenger Del Rio. Del Rio immediately went after Ziggler's head (Ziggler had just come back from the concussion), Del Rio decimated Ziggler. Half of this match saw doctors checking on a down and out Ziggler. Big E got ejected from ringside during this match. This match saw an incredibly rare double turn, Del Rio hit yet another superkick on Ziggler for the 1...2...3 to become the new World Heavyweight Champion. After the match the heel Del Rio came out and cut a promo about Mexico.
From here we get the return match of CM Punk, this was easily the match of the night. CM Punk took on Chris Jericho in a match that went for 22 or so minutes. This match was really fun. The first ten minutes was basic wrestling between the two men. The rest of the match was back and forth signature moves, codebreakers, submissions, Go To Sleep's. Punk hit a GTS on Jericho for a 2 count, Jericho hit 2 codebreakers. In the end CM Punk hit a 2nd Go To Sleep on Jericho for the 1...2...3 to give him the win. Punk spent the next few minutes posing for the Chicago crowd.
The sixth match of the night was the WWE Tag Team Title match between The Shield's Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins going up against Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan. This match was a fine tag team match, not incredible, but not bad by any means. This match really exploded when Daniel Bryan got the hot tag, Bryan went nuts on The Shield. In the end Reigns speared Bryan, Orton RKO'd Reigns, Rollins through Orton out of the ring before Rollins hit Bryan with a Curb Stomp for the 1...2...3 to retain the Tag Titles for the Shield.
The Main Event of WWE Payback 2013 was a 3 Stages Of Hell Match between John Cena and Ryback, looking back on this Ryback deserved to be WWE Champion atleast once. He was such a humorous, incredibly powerful guy who had natural charisma. There isn't too much to break down in this match, the first stage was a corny lumberjack match. Cena did a dive onto the lumberjacks. The second fall was a street fight where Ryback powerbombed Cena through a table and the steel stairs were used. The third fall was an Ambulance Match where the Ambulance door and hood got ripped off before Cena AA'd Ryback through the Ambulance to retain his WWE Title.
Overall Show Rating: Pretty Good; This show only took place three years ago, but I could still find countless things on this show that were so much better then the current WWE Product. On this show the undercard matches had some storylines, Kaitlyn's mental scars because of the secret admirer, Axel trying to honor his father by winning the IC Title, Jericho claiming that he was the true best in the world because CM Punk doesn't care about the business anymore.
Nowadays the undercard feuds see Natalya disliking Becky Lynch for some reason, Darren Young trying to win for coach Backlund and Rusev attacking Zack Ryder for no reason. The main event of this show was Cena winning and thus retaining his WWE Title over Ryback. Top notch show.
