Today I am here to review my favorite WWE PPV of the PG Era, as you can see in the title this will be a review of WWE Extreme Rules 2012. This review will be a more informal one, no structure to it.
The first match of the night was a Falls Count Anywhere Match between Randy Orton and Kane, these two began the match by doing a brawl around the crowd. They go backstage into the locker room area, following that they continue brawling back to the ringside area. Randy Orton at one point DDT's Kane from the announce table to the floor which was pretty cool. The finish to the match saw Randy Orton hit an RKO to Kane on a Steel Chair for the pinfall.
The second match of the night was a squash match with Brodus Clay defeating Dolph Ziggler, this match went for about four minutes. Brodus has Hornswoggle and the Funkadactyls at ringside dancing, whilst Ziggler had Swagger and Vickie at ringside. The ending to the match saw Brodus knock Swagger off the apron before headbutting Ziggler and hitting him with a splash for the pinfall victory.
Going backstage John Laurinaitis, Eve Torres, Teddy Long, Big Show and Cody Rhodes spin a wheel to determine the stipulation for the IC Title Match, the wheel lands on Tables Match. The Tables Match for the Intercontinental Championship between Big Show and Cody Rhodes took place next, this match went for about six minutes. The ending was weak, Big Show's foot slipped off the apron and his foot smashes through the table. After the match Big Show chokeslammed Cody through a table before body slamming Cody through a table on the outside.
Backstage Matt Striker interviews Daniel Bryan who calls Striker an idiot, Bryan also insults the Chicago fans. This lead to the 2 Out Of 3 Falls Match for the World Heavyweight Championship between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan. This match went for 25 minutes, the first 12 or so minutes of this match was Bryan working over the shoulder of Sheamus. Bryan through Sheamus' shoulder into the steel post. The first fall ended with Bryan getting himself disqualified by kicking Sheamus shoulder relentlessly. The second fall ended with Bryan making Sheamus pass out to the YES Lock, therefore it's 1-1. The third fall went for about ten minutes and was much more back and forth. But ultimately Sheamus hit a Brogue Kick for the 1...2...3 to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
Next up two local jobbers came out and cut a quick promo only for Ryback to come out and squash them in a minute and a half. From here we go backstage and Matt Striker is interviewing CM Punk, Punk is talking about what Jericho has done to him and how he is happy to be in his hometown of Chicago.
That lead into the Chicago Street Fight for the WWE Championship between CM Punk and Chris Jericho. This match was a really fun war, Jericho was getting in the face of Punk's sister and mother only for Punk's sister to slap Jericho. Punk slammed Jericho on an announce table board. At one stage Jericho locked Punk in the Walls Of Jericho, Punk escaped by grabbing a fire extinguisher and spraying Jericho's eyes. The spot of the match saw Punk hit a diving elbow drop from the top rope to Chris Jericho who was laying on the Spanish Announce Table. The ending to this match saw Jericho thrown onto the exposed turnbuckle into a GTS from CM Punk for the 1...2...3 to end the match.
At this point we are 2 hours and 10 minutes in, the next fifteen minutes weren't great. We had a Divas Championship Match between Nikki Bella and Layla, which Layla won in a couple of minutes. We also get another backstage segment with John Laurinaitis. Then we had our main event, an Extreme Rules Match between John Cena and Brock Lesnar. This match was great, it wasn't really a complex match. Brock Lesnar made Cena bleed within the first 15 seconds. Lesnar worked over Cena for 17 minutes (which was glorious), then Cena hit an AA to Lesnar onto Steel Steps for the pinfall victory.
Overall Show Rating: Great; This show had four match which I'd go back and watch, the opener between Kane and Randy Orton was really entertaining. The other undercard matches weren't half bad either, the 2 Out Of 3 Falls Match for the World Title between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan was a good wrestling match with Bryan working over Sheamus' shoulder. The Chicago Street Fight for the WWE Title was probably Match Of The Night. But the match that I'd love to go back and watch is the Extreme Rules Match between Brock Lesnar and John Cena.
This is a fun show which I recommend you go back and rewatch.
